ECA World Fitness
April 2009
In this economic climate, one needs to position themselves in the best possible light.

Adapted from Interview guide by Ingrid Tineo.

Selling yourself begins with your Personal Pitch

To think about yourself, consider the following topics:
·    Long-standing as well as brand-new interests and hobbies
·    Talents and abilities that you have and would like to use in a job setting
·    Skills that you are interested in further developing or improving
·    Activities and tasks that you would like to avoid in a job setting
·    Kinds of people and environments that you prefer

Tips
Concentrate on being your "best self."  By focusing on positive elements, you will help to make the tone of the entire interview a positive one.
Use specific examples and anecdotes from your past to illustrate important points about yourself. Generalities are usually weaker than specifics in trying to prove a point.

Feel free to take time to think before you answer, particularly when asked a thoughtful question.  Three or five seconds may seem like an eternity, but it is perfectly acceptable to take that time before beginning to speak.

To answer the question: "Tell me about yourself," consider the following:
Your Personal Pitch should be approximately two minutes long and include the following areas:
·    Personal Introduction; Professional Introduction, Highlight key strengths/skills; Give specific examples of your accomplishments; Summarize why you should be hired.

Remember to keep in mind the following:
·    To whom you are pitching; In what they are interested; Who your likely competitors are; What you bring to the position/company that your competitors do not; Come across as enthusiastic, articulate, and knowledgeable.

An example of what you should NOT say: "I'm happily married and originally from Denver.  My husband was transferred here three months ago, and I've been getting us settled in our new home.  I'm now ready to go back to work.  I've worked in a variety of jobs, usually customer service-related.  I'm looking for a company that offers growth opportunities."

Potential employers want to hear about your professional skills, experience, and accomplishments and your personal traits that are directly related to the position.  This is not a first date.

Your personal pitch should be a 30-second to 2-minute long infomercial about you containing the most important and relevant information you want the listener to know.

To prepare your pitch, you must know:
·    Something about the person you are pitching to.
·    What they want in a candidate.
·    What they are interested in.
·    Characteristics of your competitors your unique advantage.

One Body One World

With World Malaria Day fast approaching this Saturday, I want to share how your support has changed the life of a refugee. There are the facts: Malaria is the number one killer of refugees in Africa. Hundreds of thousands of refugees need bed nets to protect them from the mosquitoes that carry malaria. But the bed net you send is more than just a net to sleep under.

Commemorate World Malaria Day this year by sending a net and saving a life.

In 1992, Somalian refugee Dahabo fled her home and arrived in Ifo camp in Dadaab, Kenya - where she has lived ever since in a mud hut. When I handed her a bed net, she said to me with such joy, "Now I have something to protect me, and I will use it nicely and I will use it well." The 56-year-old mother has four married daughters who also live in the camp. Dahabo has been to the hospital several times over the years to be treated for malaria.

This rainy season, because of your support, she will have extra protection against this deadly disease. In the few minutes I spent with Dahabo, I was deeply touched by her gratitude, and even more so by the simplicity and optimism with which she spoke. She had spent 16 years in a UNHCR refugee camp, but she hadn't lost her spirit and now she had the comfort and protection of a bed net.

In a place where personal possessions are few, and sleeping safely and peacefully through the night is a luxury, I was privileged to be able to hand a net to a family to call their own. A simple blue bed net to call their own is also a life saved from the ravages of malaria.

There are thousands of others like Dahabo in refugee camps in Africa. For just $10, you can help protect a refugee with a bed net and give them a better life. Send a net for World Malaria Day.
