by: Ellen G. Goldman, M.Ed. EnerG Coaching, LLC Certified Personal Trainer Fitness & Wellness From the Inside Out
Ellen Goldman is one of the presenters at our upcoming NYC Convention, and the founder of EnerG Coaching, providing wellness coaching, personal training, seminars on health and well-being. She holds a BS and Masters in Physical Education, and is certified by ACSM, AFAA, and Wellcoaches Corporation.
Resolutions are promises we make to ourselves; declarations we say out loud or in our heads.
They tend to be a bit vague, often represent some area of self-improvement, and usually are attached to our emotions. The problem I see with New Year's Resolutions are too often they are about "shoulds", rather than wants. Year after year, the same things show up on the list: loose weight, get in shape, spend more time with family and friends, eat better, get organized, etc. etc. Most people rarely attach resolutions to a well thought out plan of action. And since resolutions are seldom specific enough or measureable, we don't feel like we've accomplished much when the next year rolls around. The same resolutions are on our list again. We end up feeling badly about ourselves, like a failure, and promising ourselves this New Year will be different.Like most, I have all kinds of good intentions for 2009. However, rather than make New Year's Resolutions, when January rolls around, I create a theme for the upcoming year. Then I write very specific goals and attach a time frame to them, around that theme. This year, my theme is "The Year of Speaking and Group Coaching". Although I have done many speaking engagements during my professional career, most have come through invitation. I love teaching and speaking, and am ready to take this part of my services to the next level. Since my kids are grown and out of the house, I now have the opportunity to travel, which will open the door to many more opportunities. So, my goals center around becoming more proactive in getting speaking engagements. I am thrilled to be kicking off 2009 speaking at the ECA Conference, introducing fitness professionals to wellness coaching.A great part of my business centers around one-on-one wellness coaching. In anticipation of the change in the economy, I plan to create more programs around group coaching. This will allow me to offer coaching opportunities to a greater number of individuals at a more affordable price, allowing me to earn as much, if not more per hour, as I do with my one-on-one clients. To assure that I succeed in making 2009 "The Year of Speaking and Group Coaching", I am currently participating in classes on both these topics with master coaches. Setting weekly goals and being accountable to my coaches and classmates is how I know I will fulfill my intentions for the new year.
Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00pm Training and Coaching Partnership Lecture with Ellen Goldman & Margaret Moore Gain an understanding of the emerging field of Wellness Coaching and how it can bring your clients and your career to a new level. Be introduced to the skills of coaching psychology, and see how a live coaching demo can help clients reach self-efficacy.

OBOW - One Body One World President Obama will direct federal regulators to move swiftly on an
application by California and 13 other states to set strict automobile
emission and fuel efficiency standards. The directive makes good on an Obama campaign pledge and signifies a
sharp reversal of Bush administration policy. Granting California and
the other states the right to regulate tailpipe emissions would be one
of the most emphatic actions Mr. Obama could take to quickly put his
stamp on environmental policy.
Mr. Obama's presidential memorandum will order the EPA to reconsider the Bush administration's past rejection of the
California application. While it stops short of flatly ordering the
Bush decision reversed, the agency's regulators are now widely expected
to do so after completing a formal review process. Once they act,
automobile manufacturers will quickly have to retool to begin producing
and selling cars and trucks that get higher mileage than the national
standard, and on a faster phase-in schedule. The auto companies have
lobbied hard against the regulations and challenged them in court. In addition, Mr. Obama will
direct the Transportation Department to quickly finalize interim
nationwide regulations requiring the automobile industry to increase
fuel efficiency standards to comply with a 2007 law, rules that the
Bush administration decided at the last minute not to issue. To
avoid losing another year, Mr. Obama will order temporary regulations
to be completed by March so automakers have enough time to retool for
vehicles sold in 2011. Final standards for later years will be
determined by a separate process that under Mr. Obama's order must take
into consideration legal, scientific and technological factors. He
will also order federal departments and agencies to find new ways to
save energy and be more environmentally friendly. And he will highlight
the elements in his $825 billion economic stimulusplan intended to create jobs around renewable energy. But the centerpiece
of the anticipated announcement is Mr. Obama's directive to the
Environmental Protection Agency to begin work immediately on granting
California a waiver, under the Clean Air Act, which allows the state, a longtime leader in air quality matters, to
set standards for automobile emissions stricter than the national rules. By JOHN M. BRODER and PETER BAKER from the New York Times
